Gardening: Growing Veg - Broccoli

broccoli growingBroccoli & Calabrese

Known as a superfood full of vitamins to us mums, but little trees to children - let them grow their own and play giants eating them at teatime!

Strangely the usual broccoli we buy from the supermarket is actually Calabrese which is quicker to grow than Broccoli (which is actually purple or white). It can take just 6 weeks to get from planting to your table with some varieties.

Sow mid May to June (can be earlier if you've got a warm spot in your house for the seed tray) and plant outside or into larger pots when they've grown 2/3 real leaves (in addition to the original two sprouting leaves).

Varieties to try:

  • Calabrese Sakura: Ready to eat in just 6-12 weeks, this is a variety bred specially for small spaces.
  • Arcadia: A reliable variety that keeps its flavour. Once it's cut, smaller shoots follow.
