Gardening: Growing Veg - Potatoes
Possibly one of the crops you think can't be grown unless you've got space for rows upon rows. When actually you can grow potatoes very successfully in a stack of 4/6 old tyres (contact a local garage - they have to pay to have tyres removed so you are doing them a favour by taking them away). Stand a couple of tyres on free draining soil, fill with a good quality compost and plant 2 or 3 seed potatoes. As the shoots begin to grow, add another tyre and more compost until you have a tower or up to 6 tyres. When the plant has died back at the end of the season, lift the tyres and they will be full of potatoes. You can buy special potato buckets that follow this method but you could just as easily use a strong sack.
Varieties to try:
- Charlotte: A Salad potato preferred by chefs. Delicious served hot or cold.
- Kestral: A highly recommended trouble free potato that is excellent for making chips and roast potatoes.
- Rocket: A First Early, lift as soon as they are ready to enjoy a delicious new potato.
