Chicken Pox in Pregnancy
Risks of Chicken Pox in Pregnancy
Do you have younger children or come into contact with other children with Chicken Pox? Many women do during pregnancy and are unsure of the risks to their unborn baby.
- If you have had chicken pox before then there should be no risk to your baby.
- If you contract chicken pox after 20 weeks gestation then there should be no risk to your baby.
- If you haven't had chicken pox and come into contact before 20 weeks gestation then there is the risk of your baby contracting the severe chicken pox syndrome. If you do come into contact, get in touch with your midwife or GP as to what treatment if any they recommend.
- After 20 weeks up to term there is no risk to your baby as antibodies will cross the placenta to protect him or her.
- If you develop a chicken pox rash one week before delivery and up to a month after then your baby may be at risk of infection after birth.
