Sleep tips in pregnancy

A sleeping pregnant womanLong before your little baby's cries keep you awake you may find you are already losing sleep.

Here are a few real-life tips and ideas for helping you get the best sleep you can.

Have a hot milk with a spoonful of honey at bedtime, ideally sipped in bed.

If you can't get comfortable, try investing in one of those V-shaped pillows - these are usually sold for breastfeeding but because of their shape you can put half under your bump and the other bit between your legs reducing pressure.

If you keep having to get up to wee, only to find nothing more than a dribble comes (so frustrating!), think about having an old-fashioned commode (or grown-ups' potty!) under your bed.

Relaxation tapes: they are boring to do, but maybe that's why they work - they bore you to sleep!

Camomile tea sipped through the day can keep you calm and prepare you for a good night's sleep

Yoga is good for helping you get a good night's sleep, but not too late in the evening as that can have the opposite effect of energising you. Try to find a morning or early evening class.

If you suffer from fidgety legs at night, try sipping tonic water. The quinine is effective for settling your legs. Alternatively (or as well, but perhaps not at the same time!) lie with your legs up the back of the bed or up the wall. This sorts out the blood flow which in turn sorts out your irritable legs.
